Marvel is making a big change at this year’s X-Men Hellfire Gala

Marvel is making a big change to this year’s Hellfire Gala, the annual (now) interactive event that lets Marvel fans vote for a new X-Men team. Hellfire Gala is just one of the big crossover events Marvel has launched in its era of the X-Men’s “House of X” reboot – and ultimately one of the biggest promotional successes. However, many Marvel fans were also critical of a Rashamon-style story that Hellfire Gala tried to tell via its many comic book issues – so far, Marvel Comics has chosen to simplify things!

The 2022 X-Men Hellfire Gala won’t be a complete crossover story published across the X-Men Books, instead, it will be a single shot revealing the new X-Men squad lineup in one release!

Marvel’s X-Men creative team started teasing their annual Hellifire Gala during Marvel’s X-Men Comic-Con At Home 2021 panel, with X-Men and Marauders’ Gerry Duggan stating, “The exciting way we’re going from now on is, we’ll have a party Hellfire annual with a newly elected team…maybe.” It’s Duggan now confirming the new situation, tweeting:

“#XMenVote is coming to an end soon. You’ll see more from all the nominees whether they win or not. We let you in to vote b/c it’s fun. Please take it easy on each other. It’s a tough world, be kind, and read our X-Men Hellfire Gala shot to find out.” who won.”

At the same time, there were obvious logistical issues with the start of the first Hellfire Gala; Fans found it difficult to keep the event sequence straight (which is literally indexed by hours in the books), and there were often events from one chapter spoiled by another. In the end, there were two real big promotional wins for the Hellfire Gala:

  1. Get both Marvel Comics and major fans alert, interested, and engaged with the X-Men roster voting.
  2. Getting a host of celebrities and famous personalities to make their likeness to the event, Hellfire Gala has taken on the defining effect of mirroring the real-life Met Gala, with “celebrity appearances” included as Easter eggs in every book.

When you really think about it, the above two goals are still easy to achieve in an epic one-shot space. It’s also a good excuse for Marvel to treat Hellfire Gala-shots as an excellent book, dealing with all the bells and whistles that would justify a higher cost, as well as some collectors’ coveted exclusives.

Marvel’s Hellfire Gala 2022 arrives in June.
