The seismic transformation into the Brave Universe is coming. By this time next week, Jack Boniface will be back after a short hiatus within the pages shadow Man #5. Horror mastermind Colin Boone returns to the series with artist Pedro Andreu (bloodshot), and ComicBook.com has the inside scoop on not only what fans can expect from the return of Valiant’s leading horror hero, but from Deadside War arc, Valiant’s first-ever event of the year.
As Boone tells us, this war—between the world in which we humans live and the Deadside, where the spirits of the dead rule—was something he’s wanted to say since he started writing the first issue.
“The way the story was told changed along the way,” Boone says. “There have been many discussions about the best way to run everything. I think readers will enjoy what’s going on here, but the rendition is something that even surprised me. In writing the story, I do something very different things with this book, especially editions 7 and 8. You’ll see what I mean when These issues come. So, yeah, the end, and pretty much the one I expected, but also the beginning of some pretty big things.”
As we saw in the closing moments of shadow Man #4 From Bunn and Jon Davis-Hunt, it is revealed that Boniface aims to bring Deadside and Earth into one unique world, as he believes that everyone involved can live in harmony. Boone adds that it may not be the best choice for the hero, but it is one of the only options for the problem at hand.
“I have found in recent years that when bad times hit, sometimes unruly schemes emerge. Sometimes, these schemes prove very quickly as ‘the only option,’” the writer supposes. “We throw everything we have on them. We convince ourselves that we are doing the only thing that can be right. Sometimes we fall on our faces. When that happens, we should pick ourselves up, pick the parts off our faces, and try again. If we’re lucky, something from our failed plan might enlighten a more successful follow-up.”
For Valiant fans who are hoping this is a real hit, Bunn adds that there will be some big surprises in store. Not only will Abettors, Alyssa, and Punk Mambo return to aid the eponymous hero in Deadside War, but many others will inevitably appear.
ComicBook.com has taken an advanced peek at shadow Man #5, and we feel Andreo’s calligraphy is an exceptional match to the story at hand. In fact, the artist tells us that the editors he worked with at Valiant encouraged him to push the pedal to the metal level and push forward with full force. “This is just the beginning,” Andrea warns. “Wait until you see the following problems!”
In addition to catching up on all of the previous Shadowman comics, Andreo says he and Bunn spoke at length about specific types of horror they wanted to tell in this arc.
“Colin has been a great support from the start and is always very clear about the references and visual horror he wants me to portray and that has been helpful,” adds Andrew. “We haven’t had any marathons, because I’m a scared cat when it comes to being scared
Movies! [laughs] I just can’t stand them. But there are definitely winks for comics, movies, and other horror stuff in shadow Man!
