S.African study indicates Omicron is less severe even for unvaccinated people

A study in South Africa, Friday, showed that unvaccinated people infected with the omicron virus from the Corona virus may be less likely to develop serious illness and require hospital care or die than was the case with previous variants.

The study, conducted by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NICD) in the Western Cape and not yet peer-reviewed, concluded that about 11,600 patients from the first three waves of COVID-19 were compared with about 5,100 of the Omicron-paid waves. The wave that started in November.

Globally Omicron tended to cause less serious illness, proportionately fewer hospital admissions and deaths, compared to previous variables.

Scientists are trying to determine to what extent this is caused by higher rates of immunity from a previous vaccination or disease, or because Omicron is intrinsically less bad.

The study concluded that about a quarter of the reduced risk of severe disease with Omicron was attributable to characteristics of the virus itself.

“In the Omicron-led wave, severe COVID-19 outcomes were mostly reduced by protection conferred by prior infection and/or vaccination, but a substantial reduction in virulence could result in a ~25% lower risk of severe hospitalization or death compared to Delta,” she said. studying.
