Martha Skye Murphy and Maxwell Sterling collaborate on new ‘Distance on Earth’ EP: Stream

Martha Sky Murphy and Maxwell Sterling have released a new collaborative online version titled distance on the ground. Designed as travel music, the project features two long improvisational tracks accompanied by an interactive website “where the listener can travel in real time to and with music in their chosen environment,” according to a press release. Listen to the project below.

distance on the ground It began as a conversation where words were replaced by sound as Maxwell and I shared our interests in expressing place and space within a long medium,” Murphy explained in a statement. “We started recording almost immediately when we met. An organic, smooth movement arose between our devices, and my voice answered Maxwell’s rich double voice and vice versa. The silent orgasm lasted for more than 3 hours. We talked like this again a few weeks later, and documented it all for another 5 hours. distance on the ground It is the combined result of our geographical discussions through music. Every time I listen to 86 km and 93.3 km, they reveal themselves differently to me as another location, path or direction is revealed.”

Sterling added: “These recording sessions with Martha were very energizing after isolation and not playing live music. There is something profoundly healing in the music that came from these sessions, something akin to a live performance for me. The interactive and acoustic relationship between the sound and the double bass is Something I love to explore, and with Martha’s vocal prowess and meticulous processing, it seemed like a very natural synthesis right from the start.”

Last year, Martha Sky Murphy released a triptych called Cement. Sterling released its latest project turn of the ferry last spring.
