Catch up on the cover model search finalist Kayla Mack

We’re so happy for Cover Model Search winner, Ianna Jackson – but we also love the two runners-up, Kayla Mack and Reed Henry! We talked to Kayla about how life has changed since the last time we spoke to her.

Hi Kayla! What have you been doing since the cover model search photo was taken in August?

I’ve been so busy dancing every day in my first year at Juilliard, and absolutely love it! My class is small, only 22 dancers, and it is a dream to be surrounded by so many supportive and talented people. Right now, we’re in the midst of rehearsals for a show called new dances, and my class piece was designed by Caili Quan, formerly of BalletX.

What was your campaign strategy for CMS?

It felt strange to be campaigning for myself, but the people around me were so helpful! It was very interesting to see how my friends, who all go to different colleges, would post about voting for me, then tell their friends about it, and so on. It’s crazy to think that people who don’t know me well were helping me vote. My family was also very excited and voted every day. Overall, this experience definitely added an extra layer of gratitude to the people who support me on my dance journey.

What advice do you have for CMS aspirants?

I just say, “Keep doing what you love.” Sure, it’s a competition for votes, but it’s really about embracing and appreciating your support system, and enjoying the opportunity. Thanks to CMS, I’ve been able to connect with a lot of people, and it really pleases me.

What are your goals for the future?

They are still pretty much the same! I would like to join a ballet or contemporary ballet troupe and travel the world to perform. Learning different modern techniques, and hearing about the companies my professors danced with, Juilliard opened my eyes to a lot of new opportunities that I’d like to explore further.

I am so grateful to be one of the finalists for the Cover Model Search program. Growing up, I was always looking forward to the finalists and talented artists that are part of this experience. It was a whole moment to be a part of the modeling search, and it still seems like a dream to be able to share it with such talented artists as Reed Henry and Ianna Jackson. First, I would like to thank
dance spirit For giving me this honor and a platform to express my love for dance and to share my gratitude with the dance community. Thanks to the Westchester Academy of Dance and the Academy of Oriental Ballet for pushing and training me to my fullest potential, and to Juilliard School for providing me with the resources and space to explore and grow in ways I never knew I could. I wouldn’t be the dancer or the person I am today without the help of my teachers and mentors who were attentive to my interests from the start. Finally, thanks to my lovely family for their sacrifices and continued support for my passion. I am forever grateful. This has been a wonderful reminder of the ongoing support that surrounds me daily. My heart is so full of love and appreciation. Thank you from the bottom of my heart <3
