Dro You have trouble falling asleep straight away or are you prone to waking up in the middle of the night? Among the many things that can interrupt your restful sleep, caffeine is among the most likely culprits.
Caffeine has a quarter life of 10 to 12 hours, which means that if you have coffee for an afternoon meeting, you can still have caffeine in your system at midnight.
But as those who tried cutting out caffeine completely soon discovered, the cure can be worse than the disease. Caffeine withdrawal can cause headaches for a week or more afterward, and that comes on top of lethargy from not being able to indulge in your favorite refreshment.
The solution is simple, although it’s not always easy to stick to: no caffeine after midday. Of course Piccolo at 2pm would taste great, but you’ll be cursing when you can’t turn your mind off later. Even tea or Coke – it is better to avoid them all.
Of course it will probably crash in the middle of the afternoon. Eat a piece of fruit. Or go for a run. But caffeine is not your friend. Did you know that caffeine intake has been linked to the rise of capitalism and pressure from bosses to make more of your workday?
Get one for yourself in the morning because it tastes great but you don’t feel the need to sacrifice your sleep for higher levels of productivity in the day. Cut back and who knows, you might even be able to manage an afternoon nap!
