TALLASSY β€” The ex-girlfriend of Representative Matt Gates, who is also a witness in the ongoing federal investigation into the Republican congressman from Florida, was seen entering a federal courtroom in Orlando on Wednesday where a grand jury met, according to two news reports.

New revelations, including that his ex-girlfriend gave her testimony in front of a federal grand jury, were first reported by NBC News. A key witness testifying in an ongoing federal investigation suggests the Justice Department could come closer to indicting the congressman for three terms in its long investigation into whether he committed sexual crimes and obstruction of justice.

The discovery of Gates’ ex-girlfriend and her attorney in Orlando federal court is the clearest sign yet that the woman, who was not named by POLITICO to protect her privacy, is working with federal investigators. For months, Gates’ ex-girlfriend has been trying to secure an immunity deal, which could come if she cooperates with an investigation into whether the Florida congressman had sex with a 17-year-old for money in 2017.

“No comment” when he received a text message Wednesday about the news reports, Tim Jansen, a lawyer for his ex-girlfriend, told POLITICO.

Gates has not been charged with a crime, and has consistently denied any wrongdoing. When Politico called him on Wednesday, he replied, “Same nonsense. Same answer.”

A spokesman for the Department of Justice in Washington declined to comment.

The testimony of his ex-girlfriend, who was with Gates in 2017 and 2018, has long been considered a potential key element in the federal investigation of Gates and several other men. In April, Politico reported that it was concerned that the alleged 17-year-old victim and one of her friends had taped a phone call between the three, potentially leaving his ex-girlfriend open to obstruction charges because she said she didn’t want to. Talk to the federal authorities.

Gates’ ex-girlfriend also joined him on a 2018 trip to the Bahamas that was also the subject of federal investigators. Also on the trip were former Florida Representative Halsey Beechers, a GOP fundraiser, hand surgeon Jason Perozolo and five young women.

The primary investigation began when Joel Greenberg, a former Seminole County tax collector who was a close friend and “wing pilot” of Gates, was indicted on a number of charges of public corruption and sex trafficking. Greenberg originally faced 33 criminal charges, but prosecutors dropped the charges to six in exchange for his cooperation. Greenberg pleaded guilty to the remaining charges in May while working with investigators.

Geatz was pulled into the investigation as federal investigators expanded their investigation into Greenberg, who had introduced the women to Gaetz for “sugar daddy” relationships that he often found on the LookingArrangement.

Greenberg was facing at least 12 years in prison at the time of his guilty plea.
