Aston Villa transfer news: Lucas Digne ‘wasn’t expecting to leave Everton in this way’ as he neared £25m deal | Transportation Center News

Lucas Digne told Everton supporters he “didn’t expect things to end like this” as he was bidding farewell before his £25m move to Aston Villa.

Villa have beaten Premier League rivals Chelsea, Newcastle and West Ham to sign Deeney, who was due to arrive in Birmingham on Wednesday for treatment.

The 28-year-old’s exit follows a row with Rafael Benitez over team tactics, which has seen him sidelined since the 4-1 home loss to Liverpool on December 1.

The Everton boss revealed earlier this month that Digne had asked to leave the club, and appeared to accuse the left-back of putting his needs before those of the team.

But Digne responded Wednesday night, saying in an Instagram post that “sometimes it only takes one person on the outside to destroy a beautiful love affair.”

Last season, Digne was Everton’s best chance maker

“Thank you for three and a half years in the blue,” Digne wrote. “From day one, Everton welcomed me with such warmth, and for that I am forever grateful.

“I’ve loved being a part of the Everton family. I’ve always worked hard to give back to the fans on and off the field. I’ve loved the unity of the fans and the players, not just Goodison (Park) on match day but also in everyday life.

“Just a year ago I signed a new contract with the ambition of staying at this club for a long time, giving everything to a club, for the development and project that I believe in – and for the passionate fans.

“It was my dream to help the club go back to where it belongs. To wear the captain’s armband in some matches has always made me proud.

“Everything has to come to an end. I didn’t expect it to end this way. What happened and some of the things that have been said about me in the last month have made me so sad.

The Transfer Talk panel is discussing what qualities Lucas Digne would bring to Aston Villa if he were to move from Everton before the end of the month.

“But I’m not going to have a war of words with anyone. The club doesn’t deserve it, the fans don’t — and to be honest, I don’t feel like I deserve it.

“There are so many good and respected people in and around Everton who want the best for this club and not just for themselves – and I just say from the bottom of my heart: I wish you the best!

“Thank you to all of you, all true wonderful, proud and enthusiastic Evertonians. It has been an honor and a true pleasure to play for you, the fans, and the people – because the club does not belong to a player or manager, but the fans. I will always carry you in my heart with me wherever I go.

“Sometimes it only takes one person on the outside to destroy a beautiful love affair.”

Digne’s potential arrival at Villa comes just a week after Steven Gerrard brought former Liverpool team-mate Philippe Coutinho to the club on loan from Barcelona.

Villa are also interested in signing Brighton midfielder Yves Bisoma as he enters the last 18 months of his contract at AMEX.

Much progress has been made at Everton’s new state-of-the-art stadium at Bramley Moore Dock

Everton have already signed Ukraine international Vitaly Mikolenko as a replacement for Dinny.

The Toffees also acquired Rangers and Scottish right-back Nathan Patterson in a £16m deal earlier in the January window.

So far this season, Deeney has played 15 games and scored once for Everton, who are 15th in the standings, before their away game at Norwich on Saturday.

Would Digne be a good fit for the Via?

Analysis from Peter Smith of Sky Sports…

What will the France international bring to Steven Gerrard’s squad?

Denny’s fallout has clouded Rafael Benitez in what appears to be his final weeks with the club, but over the past three and a half seasons he has been a key player at Everton.

Sky Sports’ Peter Smith explains what Lucas Digne will bring to Aston Villa if his proposed move from Everton is completed.

Since joining in 2018, he has scored more passes than any other player at Everton and led his side in the assists and chances he created last season.

Everton have signed 22-year-old Vitaly Mikolenko as a substitute and while the Ukraine international has Champions League experience and played in the European Championship last summer, it is clear that he cannot match the quality and experience of Dini at the moment.

After all, Deeney has played more than 40 caps for France and racked up title victories with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

However, his creative stats will be exciting for Aston Villa supporters. At 28, Digne was in his prime and at a level where his attacking skills rank among the best through full-backs in the Premier League.
