French-Iranian academic Fariba Adelkhah re-imprisoned in Iran

Its support committee said in a statement that French-Iranian anthropologist Fariba Adelkhah had been re-imprisoned in Iran, while Paris warned that her imprisonment would “reduce trust” between the two countries.

Its support committee said: “It is with great shock and indignation that we have learned that Fariba Adelkhah… has been re-imprisoned in Evin Prison.”

Her colleagues said that Science Po’s research director was arrested in Tehran in 2019 and sentenced to five years in prison on trumped-up charges.

“The Iranian government is cynically using our colleague for external or internal purposes that remain obscure and unrelated to her activities,” its support committee said in a statement.

The French Foreign Ministry stressed that Abed Shah’s conviction was “political and arbitrary” and demanded her immediate release.

“We were surprised to learn that the Iranian authorities decided, without any prior explanation or information, to re-imprison our compatriot Fariba Adelkhah,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Adelkhah had been under house arrest since October 2020 with an electronic bracelet.

The Foreign Ministry added that “the decision to return to prison, which we condemn, will only have negative consequences for the relationship between France and Iran and reduce trust between our two countries.”

Her re-imprisonment comes as talks continue to bring the parties back to the Iran nuclear deal, with the French government signaling earlier this week that negotiations were proceeding too slowly.

There are many cases of dual nationals and foreign nationals associated with Western institutions being held in Iran.

British-Iranian Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe also made international headlines, as her imprisonment was linked to debts the UK government owed to Iran.
